“Land as an Identity”: Environmental Forces Influencing Cultures, Lifestyles, and Human Physical Traits

It is to bring into the limelight the fact that the relationship between mankind and the physical environment is a theme that has held the attention of men since the dawn of civilization. There is a close relationship between humans and their surroundings. It is true that the environment largely controls the course of human actions. In other words, it is a belief that differences in human behavior around the world can be explained by differences in the natural environment. The subject ‘Geography’ very much deals with these relationships and is known as the philosophy of ‘Environmental Determinism.” People’s cultures, lifestyles, physical appearance, races, and behaviors such as hardworking, jolly, peace-loving, lazy, timid, and courageous are all influenced by their country’s environment (physical, landscapes, climate, ethnic), and so on.

       Man is the product of the earth’s surface: Men become what he confronts in nature. The reason the hilly tribes have big thighs and strong legs is due to the workout involved in walking and climbing the steep hills. The small eye-opening may be due to the innumerable flies in the forest areas, which might have restricted them from opening their full eyes. Whereas, in the plains, the people have thin and long legs, perhaps due to the non-requirement of walking workouts over the stiff hills. The plain people have big eyes, which may be due to fewer flies around and wider eyes. There are several such assumed theories. The climate and food habits also have influences on the physical appearance of a man.

Nature of Land and People’s Identity: Nature and type of Land are important parameters in determining and categorization of people. It is based on a land characteristic that people are identified with. The categorization of people inhabiting the land region as “Hill people, ‘Mountainous people’, ‘Valley people’ ‘Plain people’ ‘Coastal people’, and ‘Desert people have synonyms representation of the people inhabiting the land. It must be stated that most people inhabiting a particular landscape have more or less similar physical appearances. People who live in mountainous and hilly areas have mongoloid features. Whereas, on the other hand, the people inhabiting the plain and valley region are mainly of Caucasoids features. The land of Europe has homogenous land features; climatic conditions which are inhabited by similar broad races of people.The South Asia and the Middle East also belong to these groups of people. The Negroid are found in an equatorial and hot type of climate.

              The tiny state of Tripura is encircled and surrounded by Bangladesh. Towards the North, the State is bounded by the State of Assam and Mizoram. The land is being intruded upon and projected within Bangladesh, giving the region a unique geopolitical significance. There is a special land pattern in the triangle formed by the hill tracts of the Bangladesh port city of Chittagong and the states of Tripura and Mizoram. This triangle region marks the western and of Asia’s longest stretches of tribal population. Its area is an unbroken, thickly wooden mountain corridor that rises from the coastal plains of eastern Bangladesh, traverses the sprawling hill regions of the Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT), North-east India, and upper Myanmar, and then meanders into the golden triangle of Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. There have been long traditions of independent or effectively autonomous existence that the tribes have engaged in. This similar hilly land, with dense forest and a tropical wet climate, has shaped homogeneous physical appearances, cultures, and lifestyles throughout history.

           The presence of “bamboo plants” and their ardent usefulness among forest land has conferred “special status” on this plant. Almost all household articles are made of bamboo. The construction of Bamboo huts, Bamboo utensils, Bamboo fences, Bamboo handicrafts, and even Bamboo shoot delicious food items has made the hilly tribes very much dependent on Bamboo plants. The usefulness of bamboo is highly praised, and even now it is considered a ‘miracle plant’ gift given by God. The Tripuri knew the wide utility of this plant, and therefore, in all worships and rituals, the parts and leaves of the bamboo plant are used and displayed. The ‘Tulsi plant is a medicinal plant, and because of its medical utility, the Aryans and Hindus used the Tulsi plant in their worship and rituals. They also planted Tulsi plants in the front and backyard, or courtyard, of their house and surroundings. Because of their versatility, bamboo plants were used in all rituals and worship by the Tripuris. They were always thankful to the plants and thought that without them, their life on earth was next to impossible.

            The people when they confronted and occupy certain spheres of land usually give the names to the land which they dominated. The lands are being identified with the occupier. That is why most of the ‘Land’ bears the names of races or tribes’ prefixes or suffixes. The land of Nagaland, the Lushai Hills, the Khasi Hills, the Garo Hills, Bodo Land, Kuki Land, etc. all have the tribe’s name prefix inhabiting that particular land. Many Indian states and territories are named after the dominant race in the area. One can form a mental picture of the races or tribes and their spheres of control over the land based on the names and suffixes to surnames. For example, it is clearly understood that the land of West Bengal is controlled by Bengalis, that of Assam by Assamese, that of Tamil Nadu by Tamils, and so on. In a world where superior races compete for dominance, the identification of land with the people who have lived there for centuries must be preserved and restored. Otherwise, the total history of particular races or tribes inhabiting the land for centuries would be changed and erased by merely changing the name to another foreign name.

 Invasion of Demographics and Culture:  There are many types of invasions. Those invasions are a threat to the identity of marginalized and weaker sections. We have become well accustomed to the word ‘demographic invasion’ and consider it to be the main threat to minority groups. Other cultural and linguistic invasions pose a significant threat to the host tribes or races. Their history and traditions can be simply changed by getting influenced by parasites or influencing races. The physical demographic invasion may not have much effect on people when the host tribes are resistant enough to stick to their own cultures and traditions. In some countries, it is the minority that rules the majority. If the minority has better strategy and intelligence and does not get influenced by the majority; then, they can retain their power, cultures, and rules. In the last century, the British were a minority in population; but, have ruled India for two centuries and many Asian, African, and American continents.

              Cultural invasions are more powerful and have a wide range of coverage. It can surpass many nations and races within a short time.  Westernized cultures and religions have a wide influence on the modern world. The dress and lifestyles and habits travel far distant and are being absorbed and copied by many following nations. The oriental cultures of meditation, yoga, and religion are also impacting many western countries. The linguistic invasion is having a far more widespread impact on the issue of preserving the fragile identities of host races or tribes. If the “host” or “followers’ (people) start naming places and people with foreign names, it would mean that the host has become one with the influencing races. If the names of Mizos and places are named with names of Tamils, it would portray and convey that Tamils are residing and have dominion over Mizoram; no matter, whether in reality, the Mizos themselves rule the territory. If the name of the State of Mizoram is changed to Tamil word, then it would mean that there is one state of Tamil in Noth-East India. The Linguistic invasion can erase and wipe away the history and traditions of the hosts and even can alter the races which have been dominating the land for ages. The indigenous native people of Tripura are experiencing a similar phenomenon and fate. We must stick to the native language and name people and places with a ‘Native word’ instead of a foreign word.

Some of the forgotten native words can be written in a bracket to retain the native sound.

There are many more of such altered names which needed to be revived………………. 

An Effort should be there for renaming and reviving the old native language which has been lost; otherwise, without much effort, we Tripuri people are on the verge of extinction.  The naming of whole indigenous tribes of Tripura as Tribals is a strategic way of covering the real identity of the natives. The ‘Scheduled Tribes’ are a ‘special status’ given by govt. of India to the weaker and underdeveloped people for uplifting them; but, that should not always become the only identity.  It can be used for official purposes for categorization. If the Mizos are known as Mizos, Khasi as Khasi, Naga as Naga, (they are all tribals, but have their own specific identity) Manipuri as Manipuri, Bengali as Bengali and not in terms of SC, OBC, Generals. These categories are only used to represent quota and govt. classifications and are only officially justified. 

           Why can’t be Tripuri/ Tipra represented as Tripuri /Tiprasa? They may belong to various tribal groups but ‘Tribal’ should not only become our identity. This type of mentality calling some other groups Tribals often, despite knowing their native identity, is a symbol of showing superiors’ races and attitude toward suppressing the other races. The word ‘Tribal’ is a connotation to represent and refer to large particular sections of people of the world who have more or less similar lifestyles and developmental status. The Tiprasa/Tipra must not be always comfortable being referred to and called ‘Tribals’,  ‘Scheduled tribes’ and Upajati all the time; as the territorial identity and ethnic land identity is much more important than government based classification. The Tiprasa/Tipra needs to be especially alert on the stereotyping tag of native tribes of Tripura as ‘ST or Tribal’; as for which the gravity of being Indigenous native tribe will lose importance.
