While every woman’s journey is noteworthy, on this International Women’s Day, Yakhrai’s Special Issue presents an exclusive interview with Puja Tripura, a dynamic indigenous entrepreneur hailing from the Tipra community in Tripura. Puja has carved a niche for herself by reviving and reimagining traditional Tipra attire such as Rignai, Risa, and Rituku, blending timeless elegance with modern flair. Through her Instagram account, Lady Boutique, boasting a substantial following of over 34,000, Puja showcases her meticulously curated collections, making her the preferred destination for trendy ethnic wear, particularly among young Tipra women. Maria: Welcome to today’s International Women’s Day Special Issue interview, Puja. It’s a pleasure to have you here.

Puja: Thank you so much, Maria. I’m delighted to be part of this conversation and to share my journey with you and your readers.

Maria: Tell us something about yourself and what inspired you to start Lady Boutique, and how did you come up with the concept of promoting traditional Tipra fashion?

Puja: My journey into entrepreneurship began amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, I worked as a stewardess for SpiceJet, but circumstances led me to return to Tripura permanently. Inspired by my mother’s traditional clothing business and my own experiences accompanying her on marketing trips, I saw an opportunity to venture into the online clothing business. With a modest investment and a desire to promote Tipra culture, Lady Boutique was born, aiming to blend traditional Tipra fashion with modern trends. I also briefly pursued baking as a business prior to the clothing.

Maria: Could you share with us the significance of traditional Tipra clothing such as Rignai, Risa, and Rituku, and why you feel it’s important to preserve and promote these styles?

Puja: Traditional Tipra clothing holds deep cultural significance, serving as a symbol of our heritage and identity. Rignai, Risa, and Rituku are not just garments; they represent centuries of tradition and craftsmanship passed down through generations. By preserving and promoting these styles, we honour our ancestors and contribute to the preservation of our cultural heritage for future generations.

Maria: What challenges did you face when establishing Lady Boutique, and how did you overcome them?

Puja: Initially, gaining customers and lacking skills in advertising were major challenges. However, I overcame them by focusing on Instagram reels for promotion, providing excellent customer service, and staying motivated despite obstacles.

Maria: How do you incorporate modern trends into traditional Tipra fashion to appeal to a broader audience?

Puja: I infuse modern elements into traditional designs by experimenting with colours, combining different styles, and using youthful and trendy colour palettes, thereby creating a fusion of tradition and contemporary fashion.

Maria: What role do you see Lady Boutique playing in empowering Tipra women through fashion?

Puja: While Lady Boutique is still growing, I believe it empowers Tipra women by promoting self-reliance and supporting local weavers. By showcasing traditional attire, we celebrate our culture and inspire others to embrace their heritage.

Maria: How do you engage with your followers on Instagram, and what strategies have you found most effective in building and maintaining a loyal customer base?

Puja: I engage with followers through regular posts, stories, and prompt responses to messages. Building trust and fostering a sense of community are key to maintaining a loyal customer base.

Maria: What advice would you give to other young entrepreneurs looking to start their own fashion businesses, particularly those interested in promoting traditional clothing and culture?

Puja: I would strongly advise aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and build gradually. It’s crucial to support local weavers and artisans, refraining from bargaining unfairly and fostering positive relationships with both customers and suppliers. By maintaining a focus on quality and authenticity, entrepreneurs can effectively promote traditional clothing and culture while also ensuring sustainability in their business endeavours.

Maria: How do you balance preserving the authenticity of traditional Tipra fashion with the demands of contemporary fashion trends?

Puja: Balancing authenticity with contemporary trends is a delicate process that requires careful consideration. I primarily experiment with colour combinations and designs while ensuring that each garment highlights the unique cultural heritage of the Tipra community. Additionally, I dedicate efforts to spotlighting different tribes of Tripura throughout the year, thus maintaining a connection to tradition while staying relevant in the fashion industry.

Maria: How do you source materials for your clothing, and do you prioritize working with local artisans or suppliers?

Puja: I prioritize collaboration with both local artisans and suppliers to ensure authenticity and support the local economy. By sourcing materials locally, I not only maintain the integrity of traditional Tipra fashion but also contribute to the livelihoods of artisans in the community. It’s essential to strike a balance between quality and accessibility to ensure the sustainability of our sourcing practices.

Maria: In what ways do you give back to the Tipra community through your business endeavours?

Puja: Our commitment to preserving traditional attire directly promotes Tipra culture and heritage. Moreover, by providing employment opportunities to local weavers, tailors, and helpers, we contribute to economic empowerment within the community. Additionally, we strive to inspire young Tiprasas to pursue entrepreneurship, fostering a spirit of self-reliance and innovation among the next generation.

Maria: Looking to the future, what are your aspirations for the growth and impact of Lady Boutique within the Tipra community and beyond?

Puja: Our vision for Lady Boutique extends beyond just a fashion brand; we aim to become a catalyst for cultural preservation and economic empowerment within the Tipra community. As we continue to grow, we aspire to expand our reach beyond the local community, showcasing Tipra fashion on a larger platform while remaining true to our roots and values.

Maria: How do you ensure that the prices of your products remain accessible to your target audience without compromising on quality?

Puja: Maintaining accessible prices while upholding quality standards is a constant challenge. We carefully consider factors such as production costs and fair compensation for artisans to ensure that our prices reflect the value of our products.

Maria: What are the issues, challenges, and benefits areas for the weavers?

Puja: Weavers face various challenges, including rising input costs and the unavailability of raw materials in rural areas. Despite these hurdles, weaving offers benefits such as the opportunity to work from home and achieve financial independence. However, ensuring fair compensation and providing support to overcome challenges are essential steps in sustaining this traditional craft and empowering weavers within the community.

Maria: What are the main demographic groups that you target with your fashion offerings, and how do you tailor your marketing strategies to appeal to each group?

Puja: As a member of the Tiprasa community, my primary target audience naturally includes Kokborok-speaking Tiprasas, as well as anyone drawn to the allure of ethnic wear. While I don’t specifically target particular groups, I aim to appeal to diverse audiences through the timeless elegance of traditional attire blended with contemporary influences.

Maria: How do you stay connected with traditional artisans and craftspeople, and what efforts do you make to support their livelihoods through Lady Boutique?

Puja: I maintain constant communication with artisans and craftspeople through phone calls and WhatsApp messages, ensuring a collaborative and supportive environment. Additionally, I prioritize providing them with financial stability by offering advance payments and immediate credit. By fostering a symbiotic relationship, Lady Boutique not only sustains traditional craftsmanship but also empowers artisans economically.

Maria: How do you ensure that your business operations, including shipping and customer service, run smoothly and efficiently, especially during busy periods or promotional events?

Puja: To ensure operational efficiency, I designate specific roles within my team, with a male employee handling shipping and female employees managing customer service. This streamlined approach enables us to effectively manage workload fluctuations during busy periods and promotional events.

Maria: What is the current rate of weavers?

Puja: Rates for weavers vary depending on factors such as the intricacy of designs and types of products being woven.

Maria: Since chamathwi is one of the most demanded and our signature traditional attire too, why there is not enough expert weavers in this field?

Puja: Chamathwi weaving requires considerable skill and effort, making it a time-consuming process. However, many skilled weavers may find that the market price does not adequately compensate for their hard work and expertise, leading to a shortage of experts in this field.

Maria: Is chamathwi sold throughout the year or does its demand increase during particular seasons?

Puja: While chamathwi is available year-round, its demand tends to surge during wedding seasons and festive occasions.

Maria: What do you think should be done to encourage more weaving of our chamathwi?

Puja: Government subsidies for traditional weavers and discouraging bargaining from customers could incentivize more weavers to engage in chamathwi weaving. Additionally, supporting weavers through self-help groups and other organizations can provide them with the necessary resources and encouragement to sustain their craft.

Maria: How do you ensure that the prices of your products remain accessible to your target audience without compromising on quality?

Puja: Balancing affordability and quality are a constant challenge. However, we ensure that our pricing remains fair by aligning it with the weavers’ rates while maintaining uncompromising standards of craftsmanship and materials.

Maria: What are the issues, challenges, and benefits for weavers?

Puja: Weavers face challenges such as rising input costs and limited availability of raw materials in rural areas, coupled with the effort-intensive nature of their work. However, the benefits include the opportunity for work-from-home arrangements and financial independence.

Maria: What is the current number of weavers presently working with Lady Boutique?

Puja: The number of weavers working with Lady Boutique fluctuates but typically ranges around 15 individuals.

Maria: How do you help them overcome challenges and issues?

Puja: We support weavers by ensuring fair pricing for their products, promoting their creations through advertising, and providing guidance in product design and development.

Maria: How do you navigate the digital landscape of social media and e-commerce to effectively reach your target audience?
