As India celebrates 76 years of independence and the Indian sub-continent observes 76 years of geo-political partition, Tripura also commemorates 76 years of its accession and subsequent union with India and the founding of Maharaja Bir Bikram College, a symbol of nation-building in the region. However, amidst the celebrations, there seems to be a troubling oversight – the forgotten figure of Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi.
Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi played a crucial role in the challenging period of freedom, fragmentation, and displacement. As the Regent of Tripura, she courageously resisted attempts to merge the state with East Pakistan and instead chose India and its principles. She facilitated the accession of Tripura to the Indian Union on and tirelessly worked towards its modernization and progress.
Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi’s journey to leadership was marked by a tragic twist of fate. With the untimely demise of Maharaja Bir Bikram on 17 May 1947, Tripura’s enlightened and visionary king, the burden of leadership fell upon her young shoulders. She had to guide the kingdom as the President of the Council of Regency on behalf of her minor son, Kirit Bikram Manikya Bahadur.
In those tumultuous times, with the colonial powers withdrawing, and the sub-continent witnessing communal flare and fragmentation, Tripura faced grave challenges. The threat of losing significant territory due to the arbitrary Radcliffe Line and the emergence of East Pakistan loomed large. Under such circumstances, Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi’s decision to align with India was a pivotal moment that safeguarded the interests of her people.
Her courage and foresight were evident in her swift response to a conspiracy aimed at merging Tripura with East Pakistan. An Islamic party, the Anjuman-e-Islamia, led by Abdul Barik, sought to dismantle the state’s sovereignty. With strong resistance from various political parties and organizations, Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi signed the Instrument of Accession that later facilitated Tripura to be a part of the Indian Union on 9 September 1949. Her timely action secured the future of Tripura as an integral part of India.
Beyond her political acumen, Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi’s legacy lies in her commitment to education and nation-building. In the wake of her husband’s demise, she could have retreated into seclusion, mourning her loss. Instead, she emerged as a benevolent mother figure to the people, supporting the establishment of Maharaja Bir Bikram College.
Ignoring the financial constraints and political instability, she personally donated a significant sum of one lakh rupees to bring the college to life. Her determination and unwavering support “force-marched” the institution into existence, empowering generations of students with education and knowledge.
Despite her monumental efforts, history seems to have overlooked the crucial role played by this visionary leader. As India celebrates its 76 years of independence, it is essential to reflect on the contributions of women leaders like Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi, who shaped the destiny of the nation.
Her legacy must be revived and celebrated, not only as a tribute to her but also as a reminder of the vital role that women leaders have played in nation-building. It is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the efforts of all those who have contributed to the progress and development of the country, irrespective of their gender or societal position.
In remembering Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi, we honour the forgotten champions of history and draw inspiration from their resilience and determination. As we reflect on the past, let us ensure that these stories of valour and sacrifice inspire generations to come and that the memory of this remarkable queen finds its rightful place in the annals of history.
